I accomplished a lot today. It felt good. One of those projects was this drop-leaf side table. I put together a quick picture tut for ya'll.
First, get yourself a table that needs some love and some lace. A tablecloth, some thick lace trim, doilies, a vintage curtain panel, whatever. I bought this tablecloth at a yard sale last year. I just never had a use for it so it has stayed in the package ever since.
Sand, prime, and paint the bottom half of your table. I used Krylon Burgundy in a satin finish. Then roll on the color you want underneath. I used a mini foam roller to make it easier and it leaves a smooth finish.
Once the paint has has sufficient time to dry pull out your lace and some spray adhesive. Spray the back of the lace and then stick it to the table. If you are covering the whole table top like I did you'll probably have to do it in sections. I recommend recruiting some help for this step to help stretch the lace so you end up with clean lines in your pattern imprint. I was impatient and did not.
Once you've done that grab the same color spray paint as you used for the bottom of your table and start spraying away.
Sorry about the photo. That's my attractive claw. My husband was sweet enough to help me take a photo for ya'll and I forgot to change my camera back to auto mode before handing it to him. Have I mentioned he's fabulous? He is. :)
Add a couple coats until you can't see the base color showing through anymore. Don't rush it and make your paint pool. It's a bummer when that happens. Not that I'm even impatient and have that happen to me causing one to redo a section... Stupid paint.
When you are done with that take the lace off, admire your work, and let the table dry. Then use some kind of sealant (such as wax or polyurethane) to finish her off.
And voila. You've got an aesthetically pleasing configuration of lacey table top-ness that humans go nuts over.
Let me know if I missed anything.

Hey Lisa! This is so stinkin' cute! And to think that you found the tablecloth you used at a yard sale! What a gem! Thanks for this tutorial, I am DEFINITELY going to have to try this out... I"m thinking maybe using this technique to spray paint mini flower pots? How cute would that be in summer colors?!
