That is what I've dubbed this summer. When we first moved in our house I had a lot of it. Food storage as well as things like paper goods and laundry detergent. I didn't have to buy laundry detergent for the first two years we owned our home. It helped us out a lot to stay on our feet while figuring out the whole home owner thing. These days our food storage is pretty pathetic. At least it was a few weeks ago...a couple shopping trips and a canning session or two and it's slowly starting to improve... I'm a little obsessive when I set my mind to something. :)
Last week my Zumba buddies canceled (I went alone tonight, not as fabulous shacking your tail feathers without a few friends) so instead I made 15 bottles of 4 Berry Jam. It's our family favorite. To make it follow the directions that come with your box of pectin for strawberry jam. Instead of using all strawberries use half strawberries and the other half a combination of blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries. Yum! The tarnished bottle rings show all the money I'm saving making my own. ;)
My favorite new recipe from the last couple of weeks is Spicy Black Bean Empanadas.
Good work Lis! I still have never canned on my own. It scares me too much :)
ReplyDeleteI need to get busy and make some jam! I still have a few bags of frozen blackberries from the old house in my freezer. I love the darn stuff :) Good job! I'm proud of you! (hope the canner worked when you used the lid :D
ReplyDeleteI'm with Kira. I'm a chicken to try it on my own. Maybe a few more tutored sessions and I'll feel like I can. You'll have to come and do some jam with me. I've never done cooked before.
ReplyDeleteIt's a little intimidating especially when I only can during the summers but it comes back quickly. The pressure canner has me a bit spooked but I'm going to try it out as soon as I remember to pick it up from my mum. Hope my ceiling stays in tact. :)
ReplyDeleteAnytime Marianne!
