Airplane Room Toy Box

I found this box at the local thrift store. I believe it's supposed to be a planter. All I know is that we'd been looking for a toy box for my son's room and this was big, solid, and semi cheap ($20 at a thrift store isn't the best price ever in my book). It was a step up from the big plastic totes with rope handles I was considering so we went with it. Here it is before.

And here it is now. I'm decorating my son's room in airplanes so we went with clouds. I painted the inside the same color as his airplane dresser.

I'm happy with how it turned out. I mean it's a toy box for a 20-month-old's room. It's going to be colored on and sat in. You really can't go wrong. I also like that it has a lot of character with nail holes and a couple chips. It's a heck of a lot better then the laundry basket his toys resided in previously by far too.

Here's a quick "how to" for anyone interested. I used chipboard and cut out a couple cloud shaped templates. I then used a cheap dollar store brush that I wasn't worried about ruining. I painted the panels with one coat of the blue paint going with the grain and leaving it streaky.

Get a little bit of paint on your brush and then blot it out on a paper towel to get most of the paint off. Start at the top and use your paint brush just like you would stenciling, lightly dabbing across the top of your cloud template.

After your do your first application, move your template down and continue the same steps. After your last application, without adding more paint, dab the entire area to smooth everything out.

And that's it. As always thanks for stopping by! Tomorrow I'll have a update on the master bath. It's coming along very slowly. :)

  3. It wasn't actually a lid. I'm still not sure what that other piece is. It was a lip at one end and covers it about a third of the way.

I want to hit some yard sales together! We'll have to set something up. :)

  4. Maybe paint it similar to the box and hang it on the wall in his room. That would be cute. Just a thought.
